For those of us who live in hot areas with very little rain keeping a lawn in good health and green can be a challenge. I live in tropical Antigua and, although at some times of the year we get a lot of rain, especially during the hurricane season, at other times we have drought conditions. What can you do if you live in areas similar to this to make sure your lawn remains green throughout the year?

There are a variety of grass seeds available that are drought resistant and will stand up to these kinds of conditions. I’ve gathered together some information about the various kinds available, mostly relating to the US, but relevant to everyone whatever part of the world you live in.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass seed is among the top drought resistance seeds that you can purchase. It will prosper in regions that are very dry and hot all through the year though it also grows well in hot areas with heavy rainfall. It is a first-class all round grass seed to use to seed a lawn. Bermuda grass thrives in full sunshine but must have an adequately drained soil. It can stay alive during periods of severe drought as it has very deep roots. It is best cut to about one to one and a half inches for hard wear and resistance to drought.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia grass has a delightful medium green colour while in drought conditions it will look yellow. It is a first-rate drought resistant grass since it’s deep roots let it locate water at greater depths. During colder weather it will become dormant and turns brown. Zoysia grass seed produces a rather slow growing grass that’s quite trouble-free to look after.

Tall Fescue Grass

While tall fescue flourishes best in moist conditions it is exceedingly drought resistant and grows well in a lot of different sorts of soils including clay soil that is badly drained. Tall fescue grass seed is perfect for regions that experience hot, humid and long summers and very cold winters but if you keep it cut to approximately 3 inches during the hottest season it is able to tolerate drought conditions satisfactorily. It is a good plan to over seed tall fescue in the Fall to guarantee even coverage of your lawn.

In Conclusion

Wherever you live, if you have periods that are very dry, then consider using one of these drought resistant grass seeds. Not only will they give you a flourishing, healthy lawn throughout the year but will be much less work too! Less watering and less mowing are always a good thing when it comes to lawns. You will also be saving water and cutting down on the expense of running your mower (unless you use a push mower) so will be helping the environment at the same time.

What kind of grass seed is this, and is it best for my lawn?

I was hoping I could attach a picture of my grass- but can’t figure out how. From what I have read, it looks like a Kentucky Bluegrass- beautiful thin dark green uniform blades. I have a daycare in my home and my yard gets a TON of foot traffic. I live in Vermont, so it gets very cold in the winter, Can I plant Bermuda common seed in my area, if so when is the best time to do so? and can get very hot in the summer. I need to reseed my lawn as the seeding we did last spring was not done with a seed with a lot of clover. Live and learn. Now after we got rid of the clover we have a ton (and I mean a ton) of empty spots. My yard has full fun for a good portion of the mid-day and all afternoon. I have fenced off 1/2 of the yard so I can keep it untouched by kids while the grass really establishes itself. I was thinking of renting a aerator to loosen up the top of the soil. The yard is too big for me to rake on my own.
Questions:
1. I love the look of the KBG. Is this an appropriate durable and resilient seed for my yard? From what I have read, KBG will spread, which is a good thing in a yard like mine.
2. Will the aerator help, or is there an easy way to loosen up the top of the yard?

Thanks for your advice!!

Are you tired of looking at your tired lawn or maybe you just built a new house and need to establish a lawn. Either way, buying and planting grass seed can be a bit daunting. There are many names and technical terms that are used and it can be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, a little bit of information can help clear the picture and make the decision making much easier.

The first consideration is what type of climate do live in. There are two major regions that divide grass seeds into groups. The warm season grasses are for lawns in the south and cool season grasses are for lawns in the north. In general, warm season grasses will grow poorly in a cool climate and vice versa. However, there is a narrow transitional area going across the country where both types of grasses grow well.

Cool area grasses grow and do their best when the soil temperature is 65 degrees or less. If it gets too hot the grass will go dormant and turn brown. Warm area grasses, on the other hand, do their best when it is very hot and turn brown when it is cooler.

For cool season areas there are several popular grass types:

Kentucky Bluegrass

Perennial Rye

Tall and fine fescues

For warm season areas there are several popular grass types as well:

Bermuda Grass

St. Augustine Grass

Zoysia Grass

Once you have decided on a grass type, it is time to buy the seed. The first thing to look for is the date on the bag. Old seed will not germinate as readily as newer seed so make sure that you are purchasing the newest bag possible. Also, be sure to check the weed seed count. It is impossible to separate all the weeds from grass seed but you should not be planting any bag that has a weed seed of.3% or more.

Once you are ready to plant, prepare the soil by breaking it up with a hoe or other implement. Just putting grass seed on bare un-prepped soil will lead to a very poor germination rate. Next, scatter the seed on the soil. You shouldn’t have seeds in clumps but there also should not be large areas without seeds. The ground should be evenly covered. Following this, very lightly rake the seeds into the soil. Grass seed germinates based on the moisture content in the soil and by being in significant contact with the soil. Many people just leave the grass seed on the surface and limit the germination rate by doing so. Optimally, the seed will just be barely covered up. Next, cover the ground with straw or other similar covering. This helps the soil retain moisture. Keep in mind that a little bit of straw goes a long way – you should still be able to see the ground through the straw. Finally, water the grass seed with a fine mist to get the soil wet. Don’t overdo this. Watering too much can cause the seed to wash away as will delivering the water with too much pressure.

Be sure to keep the straw in place over the next few days and keep the soil moist until the grass is well on its way.

Hopefully, these tips and information will help you along in growing a healthy lawn. Next, you need to find a good lawn mower!

A putting green is a treasured thing to somebody who likes to play golf. It is a section of green turf with a hole signified by a flag and is seen on a golf course. The golfer uses a golf club (putter) and tries to get the ball into the hole. It looks quite easy as the ball is very near to the hole but the shots are frequently hard. Putting greens are used by golfers. If you think you can just plant Bermuda common seed, think again. You will need an expensive version of Bermuda seed to get the low growing lush dense field you will need. Ask your local feed store to order you some. to prepare at home or even at wok by using a compact design. As a matter of fact, kits are being sold today that you can buy and install by yourself. If you can’t get enough of the game and want to take it in your backyard, here are the directions to do so.

Materials Necessary:

Grass Seed

Irrigation tubing

Sand

Soil (new and clean)

PVC pipes with holes drilled in advance

Crushed stone

Metal cups

Tools Required:

Shovel

Wheelbarrow

Tape measure

Metal rake

Instructions:

1.	Choose where you want to build your grass green and measure out the area with a tape measure to be certain you have adequate materials for the size you prefer. Select the area that is highest elevated in your backyard or wherever you are going to make the putting green.

2.	Use shovel to remove all poor soil and eliminate lumps and rocks. Use the metal rake to rake the area to completely remove of rocks, lumps and other unnecessary objects. Use the wheelbarrow to move the unnecessary items you took out.

3.	Dig out the spot with your shovel to approximately 10 inches. Lay a base layer of crushed stone and put in the PVC pipes to ensure good drainage.

4.	Lay out a bed of sand ensuring that you fill any holes in the crushed stones. This too will assist with good drainage. Fill with the sand leaving about an inch for the top soil.

5.	Spread out the new, clean top soil and be careful not to leave any lumps at this stage. A putting green should be smooth and free of lumps. You may add any contour and slope to fit your preferences.

6.	Plant grass seeds. Use the best grass on your putting green. For hot climates use Bermuda grass while for colder areas use Bent grass.

7.	Run irrigation tubings across the area. This step can be very complicated so if you do not know how to fit it correctly, it is ideal to employ a professional.

8.	Set up metal cups for holes.

Tips and Warnings:

The place where you intend to build a putting green should have suitable drainage. If not, puddles will form and the grass will become useless. Laying the green a little higher than the area can help with drainage.

When selecting the site for your putting green, bear in mind that traffic areas are not suitable. Grass rows well with consistency specifically putting green grass thus, it is best to water at the exact time everyday. You need a high quality mower later on to arrive at the evenness and quality of cut.

A putting green takes much time and attention to be properly cared for. To be exact, it needs mowing every three days, that is, cutting the grass to 3/16 of an inch.

The durability of the grass relies on factors such as the terrain, the weather condition, irrigation and the kind of grass planted.

Real putting grass takes time to take care of so if you are unavailable to maintain a real putting green your other option is to purchase a faux one and have it set up by professionals.

Many sports require the use of grass. Aside from having pleasing aesthetic value, grass also provides a level playing field for sports such as soccer.
Have you ever envisioned having a picnic on bare asphalt or a plastic surface? Most likely you have not. Grass has many purposes in our everyday lives, and it is important to know how to care for the most commonly used grass nowadays.

If you are fond of gardening, then most likely you have heard about the efficacy of using Bermuda grass on lawns, it will provides a soothing background to any landscape design, and can be placed as an overlay to most types of terrain, it is considered as perennial, and can grow on most climates. So whether you are living in a sub-tropical or tropical area, you would not have difficulty managing your garden grass.

Aside from being used in house lawns, Bermuda grass can also be seen in sprawling golf clubs, resorts, and baseball fields. Because of its popularity as a lawn implement, many people do not know that is actually invasive, that is why extra care should be taken with regards to where its should be put.

Bermuda grass seed grows best in a tropical or sub-tropical climate. In countries where snow is prevalent most of the year, the growth is slower than normal. This is because grass thrives best at warm temperatures, which is essential for its growth and development.

Also, it requires high exposure to sunlight. This can be a problem especially in countries which experience short daylight hours. If you are wondering when you can actually get Bermuda grass seed, then you should wait until the grass experiences a drought period. The seeds are released as a survival mechanism for Bermuda grass. You might have difficulty gathering the seeds though, as they are extremely small.

When it comes to ideal soil environment, the Bermuda grass seed tolerates a wide variety of soil types ranging from sand, clay, to soil saturated with gravel. Bermuda grass can even grow under a highly salinic or acidic soil, unlike other grasses which cannot tolerate adverse soil conditions. Bermuda grass grows swiftly if it is watered daily and provided with good drainage. Surprisingly, Bermuda grass can survive in an arid landscape, and can survive flooding to some extent.

When it comes to planting grass seed, many want the very best. Lawns need to look great during the summer. The greener the better for most. This is why it is very important to find the best seed supplier available.

There are many seed suppliers that will sell you the cheap grass seed. This is why you ask for the best they have. Yes, it will be more expensive but the results you get will be worth the money. Grass will be greener and more healthy looking. There will not be hard stiff grass or weeds growing in the grass if you buy the very best seed from the start.

Talk with the grass suppliers in your area to find out what brands they sell and what is the difference between the cheap and the best. They will most likely hand you a list that describes the difference. This way you can determine what suits your needs.

Always buy grass that is made for insect resistance and bred for disease. Seed that is strong will not die out during the weeks or months with no rain. This is what many people want.

If you are not planting seed on your lawn and instead planting it just to cover a bar spot else where like in a field. Then the cheaper seed may be the way to go. Depending on the area that needs grass.

Your grass seed supplier should ask you questions about where and the uses you want for the seed. Many people will plant certain grass for horses or cattle. Not to mention people have been known to plant grass in a small field for deer to be hunted during hunting season.

Another wonderful way to find the right seed supplier is by talking with local farmers. Farmers deal with suppliers on a regular basis and will know the best in the business. With the information you receive, you will be able to make the right choice as to what supplier will meet your needs.

Make sure you have planted fertilizer before you plant grass. You can plant grass directly after. Just be sure there is no weed prevent in the fertilizer as this will stop the grass seed from germinating.

After you have planted the grass seed, make sure to keep it moist. To keep moist use straw (which may contain weeds) or a protective mulch (no weeds). Without moisture the grass seed will not germinate or take longer to do so.

Fall or spring is the very best time to plant grass seed. If you have dead spots in your yard, you will have to replant grass in that area. Dead grass will not regrow.

Remember to talk with your grass seed supplier to determine what is right for the area you are planting grass. Ask any questions you need answered before purchasing the grass seed.

Once your grass starts to come in, sit back and enjoy the new look of your lawn or field.

Do you know what the best grass seed is? Which grass seed is best for your area and your lawn expectations? What are the benefits of a particular grass seed and which seed should you avoid?

I was shopping at my local feed store the other day for grass seed for my lawn. I was not real sure which type of grass seed was right for my climate area and my lazy watering techinque.

My neighbor uses Winter Rye grass each winter and it looks gorgeous but he has to mow a few times during the winter and it dyes off during the hotter summer months which looks pretty yucky. its cheap, and the easiest grasses to grow so it works best for my lazy water and maintenance personality allows.

I looked into Fescue, and those are pretty cool grasses, the thin Fescue is what a lot of the golf courses use. It grows slow and does not require a lot of maintenance, which I like.

There is Centipede grass, which moves slow and steady and grows short as well so there is little maintenance to do. Centipede grass can take light freezes but not a hard freeze without too much damage.

Then there is Bermuda grass, which tends to grow well in pretty much the lower half of the United States and is sometimes called the South Grass. Its fast growing, fairly cheap, and easy to seed and maintain.

The Pennicot seed company is probably the leader these days in grass seeds although you can usually find more affordable seed at your local feed store.
